Sighhh.. I wanted to write about this restaurant earlier, but I’ve been struck with a rather annoying bug that’s had me laying on the couch for two days straight. Let’s get to the good stuff though.
We’ve walked past this restaurant over and over again, but never paid much attention for one reason or another. Luckily, pizza was on our mind and we decided to try it out. The restaurant itself is very laid back and has a “homestyle” feel to it. Our waitress was very friendly and told us about the daily special and then let us peruse the menu. We decided to go with a half carafe of the house white wine ($12), the daily special salad ($8) and the Diavola pizza ($12). The wine was a-ok with us, nothing special, but worked well with the meal. The salad was delicious. It was a combination of mixed greens, frissée, fresh mozzarella, ricotta salata, and croutons all drizzled with an olive oil vinaigrette. On the menu, the pizza is said to be an “individual pizza”, but in truth it was perfect for two people to share (about 6 good size pieces). My mouth is watering just thinking about this pizza, it was so yummy. Instead of tomato sauce as a base, they used a sun-dried tomato pesto and then topped it off with spicy salami, fresh mozzarella and peperoncino. The crust was neither thick nor thin, a perfect in-between that met the tastiness of the ingredients that topped it.
I can’t wait to go back to Amorina to try some of their other dishes like the Prosciutto e Fichi pizza, which has fresh mozzarella, parmigiano, figs, thyme and prosciutto crudo or maybe I’ll try one of their pasta dishes like Lasagne with meat sauce. If you’re ever on Vanderbilt Avenue and craving a delicious pizza, or if the wait at Franny’s is just too long, this is the place to go.
