hecho en dumbo

After the Read & Drink event our stomachs were rumbling so we took a short walk over to Hecho en Dumbo. This restaurant had been bugging me because I went there about a month or so ago with some friends and the meal left me a bit unsatisfied. I had read so many good reviews and it just bothered me that I didn’t have a good experience. The main problem was that I ordered queso fundido as my meal. I just saw cheese on the menu and was sold but that’s really all it is… a big pot of cheese served with a few tortillas. It was a bit overwhelming.

So anywho, this time we went and I was resolved to try something new and see what all the talk is about. I started out with a sangria and aaron ordered a tamarind margarita. Both were pretty tasty. We ordered guacamole as an appetizer which was really delicious. It had a nice cool and garlicky flavor paired with freshly fried tortilla chips. For dinner we got crazy and ordered the Sample Platter which included something of everything from the menu. We tried Molletes, which were like mexican bruschetta, two tacos, one veggie and one pork, two sopes, one chorizo and one chicken and 2 burritas, one chorizo and one steak. Ok, that sounds like it’s a ton of food, and it is a fair amount, but everything is on the small side. It was super fun to have so many things to try… oh that reminds me… guess who ate black beans for the first time ever and didn’t even flinch when doing it. ME!

So I gave the Hecho en Dumbo a second chance and black beans a first chance and I’m happy about both. If you’re in the neighborhood stop by and check it out, I highly recommend the sample platter.

lots more of Dumbo eateries to review… should come easy soon!

I’m sure Aaron told you about Almondine and its sandwiches (also known as the place to get the best baguette in NYC http://nymag.com/restaurants/features/22781/ ).

You also need to give Rice a try!
There are also a bunch of places further west on Front that looked cute, by Old Fulton, that I never tried.
