We’ve been heading over to Williamsburg more than usual, which means exploring new restaurants. Our friend Angela had good things to say about Relish, in particular the Corned Beef Hash with with poached eggs and roasted red pepper sauce. So we took a trip with Ang last weekend to check it out for ourselves.
We went at about 1 on a Sunday and it was pretty crowded, we waited about a half hour. To start, the drink list was nice, with one in particular standing out, the Bloody Mary Elizabeth, made with Guiness instead of vodka. It was an interesting blend, worth a try. For brunch, I ordered the hash and Aaron got the Biscuits and Chicken Gravy with scrambled eggs. The food arrived in a timely manner and we dug in. The hash was more meaty than I expected, but really tasty. The pepper sauce was delicious, although I wish there had been a tiny bit more. The poached egg was also a bit too poached which meant it lacked any sauciness. But it all still worked. Aaron’s dish was huge. They added scrambled eggs on top of the two large biscuits and then topped it off with gravy. There was a hearty portion of potatoes on the side as well. Again, it was tasty, but we both wished they had put more gravy on the biscuits.
When we left we were kind of up in the air about the place. Everything was good but it felt like maybe we hit an off day, Ang kind of thought so too. So Aaron and I took another trip this weekend and got the hash again and I tried the Spanish Eggs baked with sliced potato and a spicy tomato sauce. We got bacon to share. The hash was pretty much the same as before. The spanish eggs were really good as well, very hot (in temperature) but nice flavor. The best thing by far that we had though was the bacon. I think it was the best bacon I’ve ever had. It was neither overly crispy nor thick, perfectly flavored and oh so yummy.
Our friends are having a friendly arguement about which is better, Relish or Diner. We’ve given Relish a fair chance and now our sights are set on Diner. Stay tuned.
