Believe it or not, before this year I wouldn’t have dared to toss a cherry tomato in my mouth. I was just a little too wimpy, but I’m on the up and up with this whole not being picky thing and it’s really working out for me. This weekend I spotted these oh-so-pretty tomatoes and was torn between these and some slightly more yellow ones. I asked the farmer which he recommended and he told me I should choose, handing me one of each. I easily popped one in my mouth, then the other, made my decision and had a little celebration in my head. I love this new attitude towards trying things, it just makes shopping and eating so much more fun. Speaking of fun, this little tomato number is tasty one and quicker than quick to whip up.
Just slice the tomatoes, toss them in a bowl, add some soy sauce, a touch of sesame oil and a chuck of torn up cilantro. Get in there and toss it together with your hands and you’re ready to go. The flavors work really well together, with the soy bringing salty and the sesame bringing a nice nuttiness to the tomatoes. I love the flavor of cilantro, it just brings a blast of freshness to whatever it’s in. I do have to admit that it took me a while to like cilantro. It’s definitely one of those polarizing flavors that some people really don’t like. If you’re one of them, switch the cilantro for basil and you’ll have an equally delicious treat.

Isn’t it fun trying new things that you think you hate? I can’t stand trying things again as an adult to make sure they still don’t like it.

Sigh.

I found out about that Mark Bittman post from your blog, and it’s one of the favorite food tidbits I’ve read all year. So simple and inventive. Thank you!
