I read most of Plenty a year or so ago. I finally gave it. Maybe I should give it another try? Always looking for a good read about the local food movement – any other suggestions?

Have you read Animal Vegetable Miracle? It’s by Barbara Kingsolver and it follows her family’s year of eating only what they can produce on their farm and buy locally. Similarly to how you felt about Plenty, I was mixed on the book. I love what she wrote but her husband contributed hit-you-over-the-head facts about corporate farming etc. I felt a little beat up when I finally finished it.

I’ve read this book, and I pretty much feel the same way you do about it. It was an interesting read, but I guess I’m not that much of a slave to my beliefs

You would probaly enjoy the show on T.V. “the 100 mile diet” its on FoodTV canada its very realistic about what kind of work goes into eating within a 100 miles or less. You can watch it online at http://www.foodtv.ca and you probaly would like any book by Michael Ableman (foxglove farm)

i would definitely recommend animal, vegetable, miracle by barbara kingslover. that was one of the first books that really changed the way i think about local food. michael pollan writes some great books as well. i preferred In Defense of Food. Omnivore’s Dilemma was a bit slow, but the last third of the book really impressed me.
please take a look at the “read” section on the right side of the blog.

I’m so glad to see this book on your blog. I read it this spring and it inspired me to sign up for a CSA for this summer’s harvest season. I even ended up (unintentionally) at the same CSA as the authors of this book. Eating fresh, local and organic veggies and supporting a local farmer has been fantastic.
I also think that living in Vancouver helped me to enjoy this book (where the authors lived while writing it). I could relate to the food, the weather and the historical and cultural references. Not to say it isn’t enjoyable if you don’t live here but I think it helped.
I also second the love for Animal, Vegetable, Miracle – I am reading it right now.
