the pudding that wasn’t meant to be…

pppppphhhhhhhhhhh. That was suppose to be a big sigh. I have to tell you something. I had this brilliant idea. Really, I did. I made some coffee a while ago and tossed in some cardamom pods and the second I tasted it I thought about pudding. I just felt like the flavor would be complimented so well by the soft velvety texture of pudding. This weekend I decided to make that coffee + cardamom pudding and things got messy… real messy.

First, I got all the way to the final step and realized it was really hard to strain coffee grinds out of pudding. Lesson learned: Brew coffee before making pudding instead of trying to strain it. Ok, so the next time I brewed coffee with milk instead of water, so as not to add extra liquid. All was well until I was photographing the coffee and my camera strap hit the coffee and tumbled to the floor and all down my legs. Lesson learned: Keep camera strap around neck while photographing and keep your cool. Also, marry someone who knows the right things to say at the right time. I somehow gathered the strength to try one more time, determined to make this recipe one way or another. I finally got through all the steps without ruining anything and put it all in the fridge. Later on I eagerly pulled my little cup of pudding out of the fridge to taste what damn well better be the best pudding on earth and you know what? My pudding had the consistency of jello mixed with rubber; I could stick a spoon in it and it would stay and jiggle around. That made me want to pick a fight with my pudding. Because I had such a history with the pudding, I had to taste it. The flavor was ok, but dang it, all I wanted was to make some delicious pudding not rubbery coffee. Lesson learned: sometimes things just aren’t meant to be.

So I have no recipe to share with you, except for the idea of the recipe I dreamed up and that was not meant to be, at least not now. Maybe it will spur a brilliant idea in that noggin of yours and you will create something delicious. Maybe I should just enjoy coffee and have some pudding on the side.

It happens to the best of us. Sounds like it would be delicious though. Chalk it up to the courage to try.

Oh no! At least if you ever do get to make the pudding, it will have a funny story to go with it. :) Cardamom coffee pudding sounds yum!

I really like your blog and have been checking in but I’m not sure I’ve commented yet - but now I have to. Really, coffee/cardamom pudding sounds perfect. As does chai pudding now that I think of it. I admire your tenacity and I hope you went out and bought yourself an amazing treat for sticking it out!

wait, wait this sounds SO good I’m determined to figure out a solution! haha! what about using instant coffee/espresso and mixing it into the warm milk and going from there? or did you try that? or use an instant pudding mix, but infuse the milk with the espresso powder and cardamom first?

i make coffee ice cream all the time and I steep half and half with whole coffee beans its easy to strain and works every time.plus it doesn’t dilute the end product with water. this might be a solution for your pudding recipe
