happy hour: favorite cousin + a note about my kitchen
I had a revelation in my new kitchen last weekend and have been meaning to give you an update. You may have noticed that I’ve raved about mr. dishwasher, but haven’t said much else about my new space. That’s partly because it’s nothing fancy and partly because I painted it blue. I had this vision in my head of this perfect light, grayish blue that would look totally awesome. Well, it turns out light grayish blue is a particularly hard color to find and my walls ended up looking like a classic baby boys room. I tried to like it. I lived with it for a month, telling myself it wasn’t that bad (it was). But then I finally admited to myself and Aaron that I hated it. What a relief! I almost immediately found a new solution, which sounds a little crazy until you see it. I painted the walls slate gray and it did exactly what I wanted in my kitchen… it makes it feel modern and fresh and even a little bigger. I still have a little work to do in it and then I will unveil the goodness. Thank you to everyone who’s been interested in what it looks like, I can’t wait to show you!
In celebration of that, I saw the ingredients for this drink and immediately had to make it. Tequila, honey, lime and bitters…. it’s so close to a margarita, but not quite there. That’s why I decided to call it the favorite cousin (the original name wasn’t listed). It’s a delicious break from my favorite cocktail and a great way to start the weekend.
Cheers to taking risks and drinking cocktails (hmm, but not together)! I hope you had an excellent week and are looking forward to an even better weekend.

That light blue-grey you’re describing is the exact colour of my living room/hallway! The light really is beautiful. Modern but inviting. Excellent choice!
Slate grey walls sound tres chic and a perfect background for the calm preparation of bread or riot of colors in a salad. Wonderful!
I love the idea of a slate gray kitchen. I did some serious gray paint research this summer for my sunny bedroom, and I think a lot of people thought I was nuts/depressed. I think its such a fantastic color. I ended up with green as a comprimise, but one day I WILL have my gray room. Can’t wait to see the pictures!
i love slate gray as a paint color - can’t wait to see the finished product!
you been boozing it up?
I’ve been trying to get my husband to let me repaint our still-too-blue-not-gray enough kitchen walls. Here’s hoping your pictures put us over the edge!
So honored to have a drink named after me
Can’t wait to see how things have shaped up for you, Kelly!
I’ve heard that blue isn’t a good choice for kitchen or dining areas because there are no blue foods, so it doesn’t help your appetite! Just a thought…
mmm, good call with slate gray. Looking forward to seeing it. Blue is a very, very hard color to get right with paint. And, well, anything with tequila isn’t hard at all to get right–thanks for the recipe
I like your idea of a slate fray kitchen. There is really nothing wrong with taking risks as long as you believe that this id for the better. Cheers!
The EXACT same thing happened to me. I had vision of a perfect bluish gray for my kitchen and I thought I had found the perfect color. I painted and it looked fantastic! Then it dried. Now it looks like a little boy’s room. I want to change it but have been too lazy to put in the effort required.
Can’t wait to see the pics of your new kitchen!
I have a light blue gray living room. You are right about finding that color. We started with a white base and added tint to get the right shade. I think it was a grey tint with a hint of blue but it looks blue, except for when it looks grey. It turned out just as I had imagined. Work with your paint store person (ours was Porter Paint)until you get a shade you like.
