grilled cheese + apple sandwich

Some days just require a little more comfort than others. Something comfy like good old-fashioned grilled cheese. I’ve had plenty of those day, but recently I got the urge to mix it up and add some apple slices into the mix. Ummm, so delicious!

Back in college I worked as a waitress in a restaurant/bakery that was frequented by an older crown. I heard all sorts of interesting remarks and requests, but the first time I heard someone ask for a slice of cheddar cheese on her apple pie I thought she was off her rocker. That just seemed totally absurd to me, but I did it and it made her happy. Later I learned that it was a common practice to melt cheese on apple pie, especially for older generations. While I thought it was a little wacky at the time, I’ve started thinking she was on to something.

There’s nothing to it, simply slice some good, sharp cheddar cheese, a nice juicy, apple (I like Fuji), butter some tasty wheat bread and you’re on your way to old-fashioned goodness. I highly suggest using a nice honey wheat bread that will pair wonderfully with the sharp creaminess of the cheese and the tartness of the apple. It may sound a little oddball, but it really is a perfect winter comfort food.

grilled cheese + apple sandwich

sharp cheddar cheese, sliced
tart, flavorful apple like fuji, sliced 1/4 inch thick
honey wheat bread
butter

1
Butter 2 slices of the bread.
2
Lay the cheese slices on the unbuttered slice of bread, then lay the apple slices over the cheese and top it off with the remaining slice of bread, buttered side out.
3
With the buttered sides facing out, place the sandwich in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Heat until bread is golden, about 4 minutes. Flip and cook until golden.
4
Eat up and feel good!

We had grilled cheese and chutney sandwiches with soup for lunch yesterday. Cheese is so good with fruit, but I’ll admit I’ve never done the cheddar/pie thing!

This looks delicious! My favorite sandwich is brie with apples and fresh mustard on homemade whole grain bread. Smashed grapes are a good substitute for apples too.

I grew up on Super Sharp Cheddar at my Grandparents’… I will be testing this soon!

My favorite grilled cheese is with apples, brie and some fresh spinach. I also love grilled cheese with salsa (could be in a tortilla too).

this does sound yummy and makes me think it would work as an omlette filling, since i’ve had a tasty egg dish with pear and brie.

Another unexpected- but delectable- place to find apple between two slices of bread: inside a tuna sandwich. Thin slices of Granny Smith add a delicious, fresh “crunch” to the ‘ol tuna fish.

I am really enjoying checking out your recipes, they are so unique! I’m a vegetarian and a grilled cheese is the ultimate comfort food and I love to add fruit to it. You have inspired me to try and make a grilled brie and blackberry sandwich on either sourdough or a nutty whole grain this weekend!! Perhaps that will be the recipe I use to kick off the “recipes” section of my blog!

We had an apple and asiago pizza (no tomato sauce) last week that was out of this world. I’m so glad you mentioned this sandwich! I can’t wait to try that combo on toast!

Microwave the apple briefly with a little cinnamon and brown sugar before adding to the sandwich- voila, a hot apple pie sandwich. I learned this years ago from an early Mother Earth News magazine. Hmmm, think I’ll have one now.

I’m not a big fan of baked fruits, but my grandmother loves apples and cheese. I am going to give this recipe to her and I’m sure she’ll love it.

    Thanks!

Don’t have a lot of money to buy some real estate? Worry no more, because it is available to take the personal loans to solve such problems. Thus get a small business loan to buy everything you require.

My grandmother used to say “apple pie without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze”. Great combo.
