best of 2010: food

It’s hard to believe another year has gone by! I’ll be on break for the next week, but I wanted to leave you with 10 of my favorite food recipes from 2010. Have a great New Year! Look for a round up of my top ten cocktails coming later this week!

caramelized peanuts + macadamia nuts- oh boy, these are such a great snack! they’d be great served in little bowls at a cocktail party. be careful, they’re super addictive!

honey wheat crackers – crackers are so easy to make! these go great with a little goat cheese.

my favorite winter salad – the winter can be so dreary sometimes, but this little splash of green will brighten up any day.

mini carrot cakes with cinnamon cream cheese frosting – let’s be honest, spread some cinnamon cream cheese frosting on anything and it’s bound to be delicious, but these little cakes are not only cute, they also hold up the tasty frosting.

cinnamon biscotti – it’s like grown-up cinnamon toast. (awesome)

asparagus + lemon ricotta pizza – again with the lemon and ricotta, but add a little asparagus and call it a pizza, it’s such a treat!

grandma june’s onion rings – onions coated with a saltine cracker batter then fried… saltines never tasted so good!

honey + sesame seed brussel sprouts- I went on a major brussel sprout binge this year and this recipe was definitely my favorite.

warm lemon ricotta bruschetta – this year i was blown away by what a little lemon zest mixed with ricotta cheese could do. i think we had these at least once a week this summer.

Buckeyes- how could you go wrong with peanut butter and chocolate? This is a totally decadent, totally awesome treat!

holiday treats: chocolate peppermint pretzels

Chocolate covered pretzels are another one of my favorite treats. It’s the whole salty chocolate thing that gets me every time. Since I was already melting chocolate for the buckeyes I thought I’d get more bang for my buck and toss a few pretzels in there. These little treats take very little effort (especially if you’ve already got the chocolate melted) and are just plain tasty.

holiday treats: buckeyes

How did the holiday season sneak up on me like this? Goodness gracious! With mere days before we hit the road, I wanted to get at least one holiday treat made. I’ve been eyeing this recipe for buckeyes since I saw it a few months ago. Peanut butter and chocolate are a classic combination, one that I never pass up and I don’t think I’m the only one who feels that way. So with a little free time, I whipped up a batch of these little guys and boy, they are awesome!

As promised last week, boozy egg nog is here! I really wanted to make it from scratch, but life got in the way, so we used some egg nog from a local dairy and oh boy was it delicious! I’m still itching to make the real deal, but until then, this will definitely do!

Cheers!

Boozy Eggnog

3 oz pre-made egg nog
1 oz whiskey
freshly grated nutmeg

1
In a small glass stir together the eggnog and whiskey.

happy hour: night flight

It’s happy hour time again! Woohoo! I have to admit, I reeeaaallly wanted to make egg nog this week as I’ve been seeing so many delicious recipes flying around the internet. But alas, I didn’t have all the ingredients. Next week, that’s what I’m aiming for. I don’t think this week will disappoint though.

I have a vintage cocktail book called Trader Vic’s Bartender’s Guide that I love to flip through and get some inspiration. When I saw this cocktail that included maple syrup, I knew my search was over. I’m a big fan of maple syrup in cocktails and this was perfect… I think you’re going to like it too.

Cheers! To a great weekend! Oh, and if you’re in the New York City area, come visit me at the BUST craftacular, booth #57. I’d love to meet you!

night flight
adapted from Trader Vic’s Bartender’s Guide

1.5 oz rum
.5 oz maple syrup
juice from 1/2 lime
dash of bitters
slice of lime to garnish

1
Combine all ingredients, along with ice, in a cocktail shaker and give it a good shake. You’re looking to get some of that ice melted.
2
After about 10-15 seconds, strain the liquid into a lowball glass and garnish with a slice of lime.
3
Enjoy!

cheddar + chive cream scones

It’s no secret that I love a good scone. Crispy and crunchy on the outside, rich and soft on the inside… sign me up! Rarely will I go for a savory scone because then it just creeps into biscuit territory. But then Aaron kept raving about this cheddar and chive scone he was getting at a local coffee shop. Of course the next time we stopped in we picked one up and holy smokes, that is an awesome scone. Not only was it full of flavor and had the perfect texture, but they also dusted the tops with black pepper which added a perfect bit of pizazz to each bite. You know what happened next… I had to try to make them myself.

happy hour: kumquat screwdriver

Yahoo! It’s Friday! Oh, and it’s also December… when did that happen?! After settling back in Brooklyn I swiftly made my way to the grocery, eager to get back in the kitchen. That’s when I spotted a basket full of kumquats, the little citrus gems that always lure me in. I mean, come on, they’re mini and that’s just cute. So today I welcome December with a lovely little kumquat screwdriver. Yes, I said screwdriver… I think this month is going to require a few of these puppies.

Cheers! To the last month of the year, to getting back in the kitchen and of course, to getting things done!

kumquat screwdriver
makes 1 cocktail
adapted from SF Gate

4 kumquats, sliced
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 oz lemon juice
2 oz vodka

1
Combine kumquats, sugar and lemon in a cocktail shaker and muddle until the kumquats are pulverized.
2
Add vodka and 3 ice cubes. Shake for 10 seconds.
3
Pour (don’t strain) into lowball glasses. enjoy!
